Ban on the use of nitrates in cured meats and other processed meats in France

According to a recent report presented in the French Parliament, it is advisable to gradually reduce the use of preservatives such as nitrates in sausages and other processed meats. Consumer organizations have campaigned strongly for this measure to be approved, reaching up to 360,000 signatures, according to Eurocarne.

Despite the approval, there have been modifications that will delay the withdrawal of these substances. Thus, in the original text of the bill, it had suggested that the use of nitrates should be phased out by 2025. But the amendments presented mean that the French health agency, ANSES, will issue an opinion on the health risks of nitrate consumption next June. As a result of this opinion, a decree will be introduced to determine a list and a calendar to prohibit the commercialization of products that incorporate these additives.

In addition, within eighteen months, specific labeling standards will be developed for these products.
