Brexit: Problems for meat exports from the United Kingdom to the EU

The European Parliament allows each state to regulate meat names for products that are not

The European Parliament has rejected prohibiting vegetable products from having the same names as meat products, such as hamburgers. But member states can regulate this issue at the national level. For the European Union of Livestock and Meat Industries (UECBV), although "the harmonized protection of the EU provided for meat names" would have been better, however, they see positive the decision to regulate it at the national level.

The US predicts a complicated 2020 for meat in Europe, but not because of the Covid19 crisis

The US Department of Agriculture has produced its forecast report on the evolution of the meat sector in the EU during 2020 and 2021. In the case of beef, the Central European herd is expected to increase slightly as beneficiary continuous financial support for the sector. Overall EU beef production will continue to decline, according to the US Department, because of some of the EU's policy proposals such as the Green Deal, the farm-to-table strategy and the biodiversity strategy. All this means that the production of beef in the EU does not increase in the short term.

Beef production falls by 5% during the first 5 months of 2020 in the EU

During the first five months of the year, livestock prices in the EU and the UK had generally been on a downward trajectory (particularly between March and May), probably reflecting changes in supply and demand caused by the coronavirus. Since May, prices have been largely recovering, possibly with the easing of lockdown measures and improving demand for food services. A lower level of imports and production may also have contributed. To this is added that production fell by 5% (2.7 million tons of beef), than in the same period of 2019.

Livestock, an essential service. The UECBV appreciates the professionalism of the Food Heroes

Long queues at supermarkets and food shops. Half-empty shelves. Only a few products in refrigerators. When re-stocked, the items in much demand at our supermarkets are regularly seen to be the now infamous toilet paper, followed by essential foods such as meat, milk, eggs, bread, canned goods and pasta.Such scenes have been witnessed in several shops across Europe, and indeed the world. And many EU citizens born after the mid-1950s are not used to such experiences. But luckily - thanks to the many Food Heroes working against the clock throughout the entire food supply chain - food security should be the least of our worries in Europe in the face of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Can you imagine a world without livestock

For Europeans and a majority of people around the world, a world without livestock is not something that is widely called for. Nevertheless, a minority fraction of the European population, are considering a world that is “free from livestock production”. This clear and radical stance may seem seductive to some who consider it a coherent vision for the future. However, the singular removal of an entire food group from our future would bring with it a number of consequences that are often ignored.
