Corderex receives authorization to obtain the AWIS ‘Animal Welfare Commitment’ certificate

The Regulatory Council of the Cordero de Extremadura ‘Corderex’ PGI has received the provisional authorization to obtain the certificate of the technical regulation of animal welfare and traceability ‘Animal Welfare Commitment “AWIS’. The period of validity of this provisional authorization is 12 months.

According to the technical director of Coderex, Raúl Muñiz, the IGP has always bet on transmitting to the consumer the maximum guarantees regarding the quality of the product, its traceability and its safety. “Corderex, as a traditional lamb production system, has always guaranteed compliance with the highest standards of animal welfare, so this certification is very important.

What is the AWIS certificate

The AWIS certificate is a certificate issued by the Interprofessional Organization for Sheep and Goat Meat, Interovic, with the aim of guaranteeing that sheep and goat meat meet the highest standards regarding animal welfare and traceability. This regulation ensures compliance with the five principles of animal welfare established by the World Organization for Animal Health, such as:

  • Animals free from hunger, thirst and malnutrition
  • Animals free from fear and anguish
  • Animals free from physical and thermal discomfort
  • Animals free from pain, injury and disease
  • Animals free to manifest a natural behavior
