Meat production decreases in Europe during 2022 due to the consequences in Ukraine, according to the EC

The European Commission has published a report that predicts that, as a result of the war in Ukraine, all meat sectors will have lower production, with the exception of poultry.

  • Regarding the beef sector, EU production is expected to decline in 2022, due to structural adjustment in the beef and dairy sector.
  • The high costs and long-lasting effects of African swine fever (ASF) push EU pork production down in 2022, despite improving exports to other destinations.
  • Sheep and goat production would have a decrease in production of 2% in 2022.
  • EU poultry production will increase slightly in 2022. Imports from Ukraine will be replaced by those from the UK, Brazil, Thailand and China.
