The Dutch meat industry wants to improve animal welfare through a new code of practice

The Central Organization for the Meat Industry (VOC) in the Netherlands has drawn up the ‘Code of Animal Welfare in Slaughterhouses’ to further improve animal welfare in slaughterhouses. In addition to all the measures in force, this Code provides for annual training for slaughterhouse employees and an annual report. The animal welfare code will be introduced on May 1, 2021 and is included in the COV’s code of conduct.

The code states that employees involved in slaughterhouse animal welfare activities meet more frequently to exchange best practices and experiences. Slaughterhouse workers, involved in unloading the animals, receive better and more intensive training every year and are challenged to propose improvements themselves if necessary.
